Dan Allender:
The Wounded Heart, Bold Love, The Healing Path. Dan Allender's books rock the human soul as well as the culture that surrounds us. I haven't read any of his I haven't liked yet.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer:
The Cost of Discipleship, Ethics.

John Sutherland Bonnell:
No Escape from Life, Harper and Brothers Publishers, New York,1958.

Oswald Chambers:
My Utmost for His Highest. You can get one of any number of editions of this. Chambers grasped the truths of the relationship between God and man. He communicated these to the students at his college; his wife compiled this book out of the copious notes of his messages. You can read each day's message on the internet.

Kenneth J. Collins:
Soul Care: Deliverance and Renewal through the Christian Life, A Bridgepoint Book, Victor Press, a division of Scripture Press, Inc. 1995.

Norman Cox:
God and Ourselves was written in the late 1950's and published by Broadman Press. It is a spiritually and psychologically sensitive study of the parable of the prodigal son.

Wild at Heart

Peter Taylor Forsyth:
The Soul of Prayer. This is a classic book about the relationship between the individual and God, creation and other individuals. Unfortunately it is a well hidden gem. It was first published in 1916 and is available free on the internet at the Christian Classics Library. Click "all books" and look for Forsyth, P.T.

Steve Fry:
Safe In The Father's Arms, Sparrow Press, Nashville, Tennessee, 1994; A God Who Heals the Heart, Deep Fryed Books, Brentwood, 1997; I Am: The Unveiling of God .

Etienne Gilson:
God and Philosophy, Yale University Press, New Haven & London. 1941.

Josef Goldbrunner:
Holiness is Wholeness, Pantheon Book, New York, 1955.

Don H. Gross:
The Case for Spiritual Healing, Thomas Nelson and Sons, New York,1958.

Romano Guardini:
Pascal for Our Time, Translated by Brian Thompson. Herder and Herder, New York, 1966. orginal edition was published in Germany in 1962.

Os Guinness:
The Call is a radical book about the meaning of life. God is the caller; we are the called.

Abraham J. Heschel:
Who is Man?, Stanford University Press, Stanford, California, 1965.

James M. Houston of Vancouver:
The Transforming Power of Prayer, The Hearts Desire, The Pursuit of Happiness. Published by Navpress, Colorado Springs. These are great guides to the art of Christian Spirituality. I think the first is the only one still in print. In Britain it was published under the name, The Transforming Friendship.

Jeff Imbach:
The River Within is about the Christian life as a river that comes from God, goes out into society around us and returns to God.

Restoring the Christian Soul, The Healing Presence. Baker Books, Grand Rapids. Ms. Payne teaches the timeless truths about the healing that comes from God. Christ works through His people to touch people in need.
Real Presence is the study of C.S. Lewis' writings and how they relate to incarnational truth: the actual, spiritual presence of Christ with the people who believe in Him.

Eugene H. Peterson:
Where Your Treasure Is, William B. Eerdmans Publishing Company, Grand Rapids, Michigan. 1993, first published 1985.

Josef Pieper:
Faith Hope Love. Pieper was a Christian philosopher of the Thomist tradition. His insights and application of traditional wisdom illuminated my heart and mind.

John Piper:
Future Grace. The Christian life rides on the hope for continued grace from God.

Karl Stern:
The Flight from Woman. I ordered this book over the internet from a used book store because of a reference in a book by Leanne Payne. It is a sort of study in psychohistory as men and women alike have forgotten feminine qualities, the feminine side of human culture, so to speak.

Paul Tillich:
The Courage to Be, New Haven and London: Yale University Press. 1952.

Paul Tournier:
Escape from Loneliness, Guilt and Grace, The Strong and the Weak, Creative Suffering. Tournier was a family physician in Switzerland who had a strong vocation to minister to persons' souls as well as their bodies. He was instrumental in pioneering the tradition known as "the medicine of the whole person".

Thomas Traherne:
The Centuries of Meditations

Walter Trobisch:
I Loved a Girl is a collection of letters, the correspondence between a young African man and his missionary pastor. The subject matter is love, sex, tradition, forgiveness and reconciliation. The pastor demonstrated in a beautiful way the love of Christ as well as the requirements of the gospel. This is a great example of the art of spiritual direction and counseling.

The Spirit of the Disciplines, Harper San Francisco, 1988.
